Benj Pasek and Justin Paul achieve EGOT distinction following their Emmy triumph in 'Only Murders in the Building'
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul's Emmy victory at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys completed their "E" collection, qualifying them for EGOT status along with around 20 other artists who boast Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards.
The duo, alongside Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, bagged the Emmy for outstanding original music and lyrics for their composition "Who Among the Pickwick Triplets Committed the Act?" integrated in the Hulu series "Only Murders in the Building."
Pasek and Paul had previously secured a best original song Oscar for "City of Stars" from "La La Land."
Their Broadway musical "Dear Evan Hansen" led to multiple accolades, including the best musical theater album Grammy and the best original score Tony for them. They had previously bagged these awards on other occasions as well. The team also clinched a best compilation soundtrack Grammy for "The Greatest Showman" and a best musical Tony for "A Strange Loop."
The third season of "Only Murders in the Building" unfolded against the backdrop of Broadway.
As Paul expressed to The Hollywood Reporter, planning the lyrics during the production of the series was an intricate task, involving a sizable list of potential themes and a well-defined storyline. After breaking down the narrative with showrunner John Hoffman, they enjoyed the process of crafting their preferred lines and outdoing each other. Working on the series was undoubtedly a delight.
