French actress Anouk Aimée is dead

She was the muse of Federico Fellini, acted alongside Marcello Mastroianni, was linked with Omar Sharif and won several prizes for her role in "A Man and a Woman" by Claude Lelouch.

The French actress Anouk Aimée is dead. She was 92 years old. Her agent confirmed this to the German Press Agency in Paris.

Aimée worked with the greatest filmmakers of her time. She appeared before the camera for Marcel Carné, Robert Altman, Claude Lelouch, and the Italian master director Federico Fellini, who said she was the "best actress in the world - after Giulietta Masina", Fellini's wife.

Anouk Aimée, born Nicole Dreyfus on April 27, 1932, in Paris, has acted in over 50 films, including Fellini's cult classics "La Dolce Vita" and "8½" alongside Marcello Mastroianni. In the first half of the 1960s, Aimée was more revered in Italy than in her homeland France.

Golden Globe for Romantic Film

One of her most famous films is "A Man and a Woman" by Claude Lelouch. The bittersweet love story, which won the Golden Palm at Cannes in 1966, granted Anouk Aimée international renown. For her role as a script girl, who falls in love with a similarly widowed racecar driver after her husband's death, she won the Golden Globe and the British Academy Film Award and was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actress. The love story is still considered one of the most beautiful love stories in cinema.

As the daughter of an acting couple, she was on stage and in front of the camera by the age of nearly 14. Her career began in 1949 with the role of Julia in the Shakespeare adaptation "The Lovers of Verona". She often played mysterious, enigmatic beautiful women who longed for a change in their lives. She was married several times, including to the British actor Albert Finney. She was briefly linked with Warren Beatty and Omar Sharif. With the latter, she had acted in "A Scent of Sin".

Anouk Aimée's renown as an actress was further solidified with her role in the memorable French-Italian romantic film "A Man and a Woman," which showcased her exceptional talent on the cinema screen, earning her an international accolade in the form of a Golden Globe for Best Actress. Throughout her career, she worked with renowned filmmakers, not only in France but also in Italy, warranting Fellini's praise as one of the best actresses in the world.
