Barmer contribution increases by 0.69 percentage points

The average additional contribution to statutory health insurance was still 1.6 percent in 2023 and will rise to 1.7 percent in 2024. For some health insurance companies, however, the price jump will be more significant. Barmer, for example, has announced an increase.

The almost nine million people insured with the Barmer health insurance company are facing a hefty increase in contributions. "In the coming year, the financial pressure on statutory health insurance will increase due to strong growth in expenditure," the statutory health insurance company announced after its board meeting. In order to bear the financial burden, the contribution rate would be 16.79 percent.

The current contribution rate is 16.1 percent. It is made up of a general statutory contribution rate of 14.6 percent and the individual supplementary contribution of 1.5 percent, which is levied on gross income and still applies at Barmer. These contributions are shared equally between employer and employee. This means that both sides will face an increase of slightly less than 0.35 percentage points if they are insured through Barmer.

Average additional contribution rises to 1.7 percent

The additional contribution to the health insurance fund is now rising by 0.69 percentage points from the current 1.5 percent to 2.19 percent of gross income, as reported by the "Sächsische ", citing "inflation in the healthcare sector" and in particular the "sharp rise in hospital care costs" as the main reasons, according to Barmer. According to the medium, Barmer has already spent 1.1 billion euros more on this this year alone than last year.

The average additional contribution to statutory health insurance was still 1.6 percent in 2023 and will rise to 1.7 percent in 2024, as was announced a few weeks ago. Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach saw the moderate increase as a positive sign: "Last year's Financial Stabilization Act has had an effect," he said. "Health insurance contributions will hardly increase at all. This strengthens confidence in the social security systems."

Several health insurance companies have already decided to increase the supplementary contribution. Others are not changing their rates. Techniker Krankenkasse, for example, recently announced that it would keep its additional contribution at 1.2 percent.
