"Barbie" shreds previous nomination record

The 2024 Critics' Choice Awards in the USA will probably be dominated by "Barbie". The satire is nominated in 18 categories. This means the film has set a new record by a wide margin. Alongside lead actress Margot Robbie, a German is also hoping to win an award.

2023 is clearly the year of "Barbie". This is also reflected in the nominations for the 29th Critics' Choice Awards. The candy-colored comedy from director Greta Gerwig even set a new record with 18 nominations. "Oppenheimer" by director Christopher Nolan and "Poor Things" by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos were each nominated 13 times. And German actress Sandra Hüller also has reason to celebrate - as she did with the nominations for the Golden Globes a few days ago, reports the US industry newspaper "Variety".

"Barbie" will be competing in the "Best Film" category, among others, at the awards ceremony on January 14, 2024. Hollywood star Margot Robbie, who plays Barbie in the toy film adaptation, can celebrate her nomination for "Best Actress in a Leading Role". Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera are nominated in the male and female supporting actor categories. Ferrera's film daughter Ariana Greenblatt could become "Best Young Actress" of the year and the entire acting ensemble could also win an award.

In addition, filmmaker Gerwig is nominated for "Best Director" and, together with partner Noah Baumbach, for "Best Original Screenplay". With a total of 18 nominations, "Barbie" surpasses last year's winner "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and "The Shape of Water", which each received 14 nominations in the past.

Sandra Hüller with several chances

German actress Sandra Hüller received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in "Anatomy of a Case" at the beginning of the week. And she is now also nominated for "Best Actress in a Leading Role" at the 2024 Critics' Choice Awards for her captivating performance in the courtroom drama. Joining Hüller in the "Best Actress" category are Lily Gladstone ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), Greta Lee ("Past Lives"), Carey Mulligan ("Maestro"), Emma Stone ("Poor Things") and Margot Robbie ("Barbie").

The drama "Anatomy of a Case" by French director Justine Triet is also one of the six candidates in the "Best Non-English Language Film" category. British director Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone of Interest" with Hüller in the role of the wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) is also nominated in this category. German director Wim Wenders is also represented in this category with his film "Perfect Days", which was shot in Tokyo in Japanese.

The 2024 Critics' Choice Awards will be presented in Los Angeles at the beginning of next year. Comedian Chelsea Handler will host the ceremony. Series will also be honored. The nominated productions have been known since December 5. "The Morning Show" from streaming service Apple TV+ leads the field with six nominations.
