Media Control - "Barbie" most-viewed movie of the year
Margot Robbie as stereotype Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Beach Ken were the most popular films in German cinemas this year. "The cinema winner of 2023 is "Barbie"," announced Media Control. "The comedy made it onto the winner's podium with almost 6 million viewers. It was directed by Greta Gerwig. The film was released in German cinemas on July 20, 2023."
Last year, the animated film "Minions - In Search of the Mini-Boss" was in the lead until mid-December, followed by the 007 film "No Time to Die" with Daniel Craig as James Bond.
However, the science fiction film "Avatar: The Way of Water" was also a hit in 2023. James Cameron's work attracted around 10.2 million moviegoers in Germany.
However, the film fell into a bit of a hole in the box office charts with a mid-December release in 2022. It had a good four and a half million viewers by New Year's Eve '22 and then around five and a half million from New Year's Day to summer 2023, i.e. less than "Barbie" in the calendar year 2023.
However, Media Control named the "Avatar" film as the "best-selling DVD" of the year in the 2023 media bestsellers.
