- Attempted armed theft results in gunfire.
U.S. football player Ricky Pearsall (23) experienced a shooting incident during an attempted robbery. His sports team, the San Francisco 49ers, issued a statement.
In the statement, it's mentioned that Pearsall was hit by a bullet in his chest during the incident on August 31, Saturday, and his condition is serious but stable. The team sends their thoughts and blessings to the injured athlete and his whole family.
As reported by "FOX40", Pearsall was heading to a meet-and-greet session when the incident happened. According to San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), who spoke with "People", the shooting occurred around 3:40 PM on August 31 at the intersection of Geary Street and Grant Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered two males with injuries.
Both individuals were taken to San Francisco General Hospital for further examination. A preliminary investigation showed that the robber attempted to target Pearsall. "There was a confrontation during the robbery attempt, leading to injuries to both the suspect and the victim," the statement explained. "The suspect is under arrest, and charges are currently being processed."
Mayor Commends Police Efforts
San Francisco Mayor London Breed (50) expressed her thoughts via her social media platform X (formerly Twitter): "The San Francisco police arrived promptly at the scene and arrested the shooter. We are keeping Ricky and his loved ones in our thoughts during this difficult time. We'll keep you updated on his condition and other details as we receive them."
Pearsall was chosen by the 49ers in the first round this year and was their 31st pick in the NFL Draft. Prior to this, he played for the Arizona State Sun Devils and then transferred to the University of Florida to play in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Unfortunately, due to a shoulder injury, Pearsall hasn't participated in any preseason games, as reported by NBC. The 49ers will begin their season on September 9, against the New York Jets at Levi's Stadium.
The San Francisco 49ers announced a new entry in their statement, revealing that they've added a 'New entry' to their team prayers. This 'New entry' refers to Ricky Pearsall, who has been admitted to the hospital following the shooting incident.
In light of Pearsall's 'New entry' into the hospital due to the shooting, the 49ers have decided to postpone any celebrations for his debut season until his condition improves.
