Around 26600 abortions reported
Around 26,600 abortions were reported in Germany in the third quarter of this year. This was 0.7 percent more than in the third quarter of the previous year, according to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Thursday. The increase observed since the first quarter of 2022 thus leveled off.
In the second quarter of 2023, there were still 4.5 percent more abortions than in the same quarter of the previous year. However, the number of abortions remained at a high level. According to the statistics authority, the causes of this development cannot be assessed on the basis of the data. No information is available on the personal reasons for deciding to terminate a pregnancy.
More than two thirds or 69 percent of women who had an abortion between July and September were between 18 and 34 years old. One in five, or 20 percent, were between 35 and 39 years old. Nine percent of women were aged 40 and over, and three percent were younger than 18.
96 percent of the reported abortions were carried out in accordance with the counseling regulations. In the remaining four percent of cases, medical reasons or a sexual offense were the cause.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, if the trend continues, we might see a slight decrease in abortions compared to the same quarter in the previous year, as the increase observed since the first quarter of 2022 has started to level off. However, the year-end statistics could still show a higher number of abortions compared to 2023 due to the high rate in the first three quarters.
Looking at historical data, the highest number of abortions reported in a single quarter was in the third quarter of a certain year, reflecting a trend that has remained fairly consistent over the past decade.
