Anti-Schlinger systems undergo assessment by ADAC - not everyone endorses the results

Anti-Swerving Systems are crucial for keeping hefty trailer combos on track even in tricky driving conditions. However, their efficiency varies. The ADAC has examined various stabilization systems.

In Germany, the number of registered trailers is on a steady climb - we're now looking at 8.4 million trailers, including 756,000 caravans. For novices and those with less experience, hauling a trailer can be complicated. A car towing a trailer alters the driving dynamics dramatically. "A trailer-towed combo responds more delicately to side winds and lane changes than a solitary vehicle, often resulting in unfortunate swerving," explains the ADAC.

In specific circumstances, the driving dynamics might become unmanageable for the driver. That's where stabilization systems, three of which the ADAC has now assessed, come into play. These systems all operate on the same principle: if the system detects trailer movements and considers the situation critical, the trailer brake is activated.

The ATC 2.0 by AL-KO clinched the top spot with an overall score of 1.5, acing all driving stability tests. A more budget-friendly option, the LEAS system, also scored well in tests but displayed flaws in processing, earning a 2.0 overall score. The Knott ETS Plus settled for third place with a score of 2.8 due to delayed reactions in the evasive test.

When shopping for an anti-swerving system, compatibility is key. The AL-KO system, for example, is only compatible with AL-KO axles, while the Knott solution works with both Knott and AL-KO axles. The LEAS from BL-Trading, however, is compatible with all axles.

The ADAC also recommends professional installation, with the status LED positioned at the front of the caravan. To minimize the likelihood of dangerous driving situations, the traffic club suggests proper loading and weight distribution of the trailer. If the trailer still sways, keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and apply the brakes gently.

Motor vehicles equipped with trailers might face challenges in difficult driving conditions. In such instances, the effectiveness of Anti-Swerving Systems, like the ones evaluated by the ADAC, becomes vital for preventing unwanted trailer movements and potential swerving.

Despite advances in motor vehicle technology, implementing reliable stabilization systems in motor vehicle-trailer combinations remains a significant concern for the safety of motor vehicles on the road.

Anti-sway testing conducted by ADAC revealed that the AL-KO system emerged as the most effective.
