World-renowned festival - Angela Merkel does not come to the Bayreuth Festspieles

She is considered a regular guest and big supporter of Richard Wagner's works at the Bayreuth Festivals, but this year, the former Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel will not be traveling to the Bayreuth Festivals. According to the city of Bayreuth, she will not attend the opening of the world-renowned festival. Her office in Berlin confirmed that there will be no visit at a later date. No information was given about the reasons.

Merkel has signaled that she would like to visit again next year, a spokesperson for the city of Bayreuth said. This was first reported by the "Nordbayerische Kurier". The procession of prominence over the red carpet traditionally begins the Festival season in Bayreuth on July 25th.

Merkel as a regular guest

Merkel had regularly attended the Bayreuther Festspiele before her chancellorship, for example, as a candidate for chancellor in 2005. As a newly elected government leader, she was absent at the opening of the festival in 2006, but she came a few days later to Bayreuth to attend performances at the Festspielhaus. She missed the ceremonial opening in 2016, but she still traveled to Bayreuth a few days later.

Last year, Merkel and her husband Joachim Sauer had to shield themselves from a heavy downpour with umbrellas as they walked over the red carpet - despite this, they looked cheerful.

This year, the festivals begin with a new production of "Tristan and Isolde". Only works by the composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) will be shown for approximately four weeks.

Program Bayreuth Festivals 2024

Angela Merkel's absence at the Bayreuth Festivals this year has raised questions, as she has historically been a regular guest and supporter of Richard Wagner's works at these events, often attending performances during her tenure as the Federal Chancellor of Germany. Her office in Berlin has confirmed that she will not be visiting Bayreuth for the festival's opening or at a later date, and no reasons for her absence have been disclosed.

Merkel's potential return to the festivals in 2024 has been hinted at by a spokesperson for the city of Bayreuth, although no official plans have been announced. The city is well-known for hosting the Bayreuther Festspiele, a renowned annual festival of operas, concerts, and recitals focused on the works of Richard Wagner, which draws a large number of people from across Bavaria and beyond.

During her time as a consistent attendee of the Bayreuther Festspiele, Merkel has even visited the festivals as a candidate for the position of Chancellor, attending performances and walking the red carpet. Her dedication to the festival and the music of Richard Wagner has been evident in her frequent attendance over the years, even when she was unable to attend the opening ceremonies.

In 2024, the Bayreuth Festivals are set to feature a new production of "Tristan and Isolde," as well as several other works by the renowned composer Richard Wagner. Fans of classical music and opera will find numerous opportunities to enjoy the rich heritage of these festivals, which have been a cultural mainstay in Germany and beyond for over a century.

Merkel's absence from the festivals this year has left many people wondering about the future of her relationship with the Bayreuth Festivals and the role that she will play in the festivals' future. Regardless of her attendance, the festival will continue to celebrate the music of Richard Wagner and the cultural heritage of Bavaria, drawing visitors from around the world to this picturesque and historic city.
