Dennis Schröder at the Olympics - An NBA-star should be Germany's flag bearer
NBA basketball player Dennis Schröder (30) is set to represent Germany as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Summer Games in Paris on Friday (26. July). Several media outlets, including "Frankfurter Allgemeine" and "Bild", report that Schröder won the vote on Monday (22. July) together with a German female athlete. The German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) will officially announce the voting results at a press conference coming Wednesday (24. July).
Did he beat Zverev and Reitz?
Schröder would have secured the position against strong competition in the form of tennis star Alexander Zverev (27) and javelin thrower Christian Reitz (37). The captain of the basketball world champions would be the first German athlete with dark skin tone - and the second basketball player - to hold this role. Nowitzki had held the position of the German flag bearer at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Dennis Schröder: "One of the best things in my life"
Schröder had already hinted at his potential role as the flag bearer on Instagram as part of the voting process in a post. "Historic!!! Everyone must show their extreme love and support to make this happen... It would be one of the best things in my life to represent Germany and carry the German flag!!!", he wrote alongside a photo of himself with the German flag.
Regarding the female flag bearer, Dressage Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl (38), judoka Anna-Maria Wagner (28), and football professional Alexandra Popp (33) competed in the voting. The winner is still unknown.
