An escalating conflict between China and the Philippines becomes more imminent.
A looming conflict is on the horizon in the South China Sea as China and the Philippines prepare to face off on a reef that each country considers to be their own. The Philippine coast guard has sent three ships to escort a convoy traveling to this disputed territory on Wednesday. The convoy, led by the organization Atin Ito, is headed to Scarborough Reef, where Filipino fishermen are planned to be supplied. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has stated that the reef is considered a part of Chinese territory. However, China is somewhat accommodating towards fishing interests.
This convoy is made up of a handful of civilian boats, headed by five fishing trawlers. Approximately 100 smaller fishing boats are expected to accompany the journey's first leg, while the Philippine coast guard ensures the convoy's safety, as mentioned by their spokesman Jay Tarriela. Additionally, an observation aircraft will be deploying. The Chinese state broadcaster CCTV has shared that the Chinese Coast Guard held routine exercises on Scarborough Reef recently.
Notably, a previous convoy organized by Atin Ito, which also sailed to a reef claimed by both parties, was met with stern resistance in December. The Chinese coast guard employed water cannons and other aggressive tactics to turn away Philippines vessels. This prompted both nations to lash out at one another with sharp criticism.
