An e-bike battery causes a blaze in a student dormitory.
An apartment in a Berlin student residence caught fire after a faulty e-bike battery ignited during charging. This unfortunate incident took place on Tuesday night in the Lichtenberg district.
The Berlin fire department revealed that the battery of an e-bike was in the process of being charged in the 13th-floor apartment. Sadly, due to a defect, it started a blaze that engulfed the apartment. The flames rapidly spread to objects nearby and quickly escalated.
Thankfully, no one was seriously injured. The residential fire saw the tenant of the affected apartment along with neighbors on the same floor escape unharmed. Other tenants of the building also managed to evacuate safely. Although six residents were treated on site for minor injuries, none required hospitalization.
62 firefighters attended the scene and swiftly doused the flames. The apartment is now deemed uninhabitable. The Berlin Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The fire department spokesperson shared their concerns, stating that they've witnessed an increase in fires due to such batteries. They strongly advise users against charging e-bike batteries indoors, especially if it's at night or without supervision. High heat or shock loads can instigate chemical reactions, potentially leading to fires. Additionally, using unauthorized accessories or attempting to revive irrevocably drained batteries can lead to unpredictable dangers. It's also possible that a manufacturer may have skimped on safety measures to save costs, especially with cheap replicas of genuine batteries.

The international community expressed concern over the increasing number of e-bike battery fires, following the incident in Berlin. Due to the escalating fires, the Berlin fire department is emphasizing the importance of charging e-bike batteries outside or in well-ventilated areas, avoiding usage of unauthorized accessories, and refraining from attempting to revive drained batteries.
