At the ticket control for the first Taylor-Swift concert in Gelsenkirchen, an American was identified as a suspected stalker and taken into custody. The 34-year-old had raised concerns through threats against the singer and her boyfriend on social media prior to the event.

"The threats were so severe that a danger for both persons could not be excluded," said a police spokesperson the day after the first of three Swift shows in the Ruhrgebietsstadt. The District Court of Gelsenkirchen had ordered a long-term detention for protective custody until Saturday. "The suspect will remain in custody until Mrs. Swift has safely left North Rhine-Westphalia."

The police spokesperson would not comment on the specific threats. They were deemed serious. The 34-year-old had possessed a ticket for the Wednesday show. He had described his version of events during interrogations. The man was to be released on Saturday.

The Wednesday evening concert was reportedly a peaceful event with around 60,000 female and male attendees by police. "There was no danger for the artist or concertgoers at any point in time."

For Thursday and Friday, US megastar Taylor Swift (34) plans two more performances in Gelsenkirchen. Further concerts are scheduled in Germany in Hamburg and Munich.
