Alfa Romeo's Miniature Gem: The Alfa Romeo Junior Serves as a Precursor

Alfa Romeo intends to transform into a worldwide luxury brand, as indicated by CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato. He plans to debut a new model annually, with the entry-level variant taking the spotlight this year. Moreover, there are more intriguing developments to come.

Recently, Imparato has been elusive about the brand's future, maintaining a degree of mystery on certain aspects while leaving room for speculation on others. One thing is unequivocal - Alfa Romeo will unveil a new model every twelve months in the upcoming years. Following this year's junior model, the first models on the extensive STLA platform are set to make their appearance in 2025 and 2026.

Electric Giulia versions are a strong probability, according to Imparato. If you believe his assertions, the midsize segment will be entirely electric, offering power outputs ranging from 340 to 952 PS. To accommodate drivers accustomed to quick refueling with internal combustion engines, a WLTP range of 700 kilometers is designed. The in-board network will be an 800-volt system, confirmed by the Alfa Romeo CEO. When asked if he envisioned a six-cylinder PHEV, Imparato remarked vaguely but emphasized that anything was conceivable.

Alfa Romeo could branch into the so-called E-segment in the future, as the company ponders this possibility. Although luxury aligns well with Alfa, the question of how it will distinguish itself from Maserati arises. However, the Alfa Romeo brand itself boasts the Stradale 33, a million-dollar supersports car featured in its lineup.

A rear-wheel-drive model is in the works

The Upcoming Giulia Model Might Embrace Electrification Completely. It remains to be determined if Alfa Romeo will ultimately execute this plan.

According to Imparato, this particular model will significantly impact future model development. The specifics of how it will transpire remain largely secret, yet there is ongoing research on a rear-wheel-drive model labeled "E-Jet." More details are not forthcoming from the CEO. If this model comes to fruition, it will target the lucrative markets of China, Europe, and the USA.

No numbered edition? According to the Alfa CEO, present Brera and GTV drivers can anticipate an adequate successor.

He presently confirms a Spider, but envisions the possibility of an open-top Alfa Romeo, which would manifest in 2029. The CEO terms the Alfa Romeo brand's essential character as "red, Italian, and sporty."

The Junior Veloce boasts increased power

Despite its Alfa Romeo badge, the Alfa Romeo Junior actually contains PSA genetic makeup under its hood. Nevertheless, its appealing appearance is commendable, which is its primary appeal. Compared to the questionable moves with the Nissan crossover Arna, this misstep appears less severe.

In response to Alfa beefing up the (electric) top variant of its Junior compact SUV, it now boasts 280 PS instead of the original 240 PS, accompanied by a significantly sportier suspension setup. The mini-SUV offers robust performance and lacks no power. Although its nominal output is lower than many electric vehicles in its segment, its weight of 1.6 tons is unusually light, resulting in acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 200 km/h, impressive for its class.

Although the Junior may not be the Alfa that hardcore Alfisti expect, it signifies Alfa Romeo's efforts to attract new clientele. If you can obtain an exquisite Italian car with the renowned brand name for as little as 29,500 euros, it might pique interest from potential customers who have never considered Alfa Romeo before.

Fortunately, buyers don't have to opt for an electric powertrain with the Junior. Those preferring internal combustion engines can also choose the vehicle, which is based on the Common Modular Platform, with the familiar hybrid drive from the corporation. This consists of a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine (136 hp) and a 28 hp electric motor. A basic model with 156 hp is also available, but significantly more expensive at an additional 10,000 euros. The top version costs 48,500 euros.

The Alfisti will find the brand particularly captivating next year with the introduction of major models. Whether electric powertrains will find favor in such emotionally charged vehicles remains to be seen. If necessary, internal combustion engines will need to make a return. Fortunately, the STLA platforms are adaptable. And then, the six-cylinder might continue to be preserved for enthusiasts longer than anticipated.

The junior's unique rear design makes it a noteworthy sight, capable of drawing people's attention.

As yet, what will be actualized remains uncertain. Alfa managers have promised much in the past that didn't materialize. Nevertheless, the brand's loyal followers persevere, a testament to passion.

In the future, Alfa Romeo might expand its lineup to include a new open-top model, potentially debuting in 2029. This vehicle could embody the brand's essence as "red, Italian, and sporty," similar to its million-dollar supersports car, the Stradale 33.

During the introduction of major models next year, some Alfisti may find the brand even more appealing, thanks to the anticipated release of models that cater to their preferences. However, the future of internal combustion engines in Alfa Romeo's lineup remains uncertain, as the company explores electric powertrains for its vehicles.
