Former ski racer and three-time Olympic champion Maria Höfl-Riesch (39) announced her separation from her husband and manager Marcus Höfl (50) on Tuesday morning. The couple had been married for 13 years.
Joint Statement
On Instagram, the couple released a joint statement. "After careful consideration and with heavy hearts, we have decided to go our separate ways in the future. Unfortunately, our lives have developed in different directions, but we will remain connected both professionally and friendship-wise." They further emphasized, "We had wonderful times together and will always cherish these memories." The former couple also asked for privacy and adorned the announcement with four photos from their time together.
There were no signs of discord in recent months. In December, she even wished him a happy birthday on Instagram: "Happy happy happy Birthday, my love! 50 years and still going strong." She added a winking emoji and wished him "lots of health, happiness, and as much fun as we had in the last few days." They were still seen together at events, such as the Lambertz Media Night in Aachen in early July, where they posed arm in arm for the cameras.
They spoke about a crisis in 2020
The couple has been together since 2010 and got married on April 14, 2011. He has two sons from a previous relationship. In an interview with "Bunte" in 2020, they revealed that they had been struggling with a relationship crisis. Maria Höfl-Riesch also stated that she couldn't imagine having children. "Sometimes a big shock in the relationship helps," Marcus Höfl told the magazine. "Either you go your separate ways afterwards or you sit down and finally talk openly with each other. It also helps if each person takes some time to reflect on certain things and sort them out. That's how we managed to save our marriage." It is now clear that the marriage has failed despite their efforts.
