AfD parliamentarian sustains head trauma in Schwerin.
In the lead up to the European elections, violent attacks against politicians are becoming more frequent. The latest incident occurred in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where an AfD member of the state parliament was assaulted and required hospitalization.
An unidentified MP from the AfD party in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania suffered a head wound after being struck by a glass ashtray in a Schwerin pub on Friday night. The incident began when the suspect, a 52-year-old man, verbally abused the politician in a group of four. A confrontation ensued, which ended with the suspected attacker hurling the glass ashtray at the victim.
Police present at the scene reported that the suspect claimed he had acted out of political hatred. He identified himself as being part of the left-wing political spectrum. Consequently, the police launched an investigation into the assault and insult.
There has been a rising trend of violence against politicians in recent times. Earlier this month, the SPD MEP Matthias Ecke was severely beaten in Dresden, whilst a 28-year-old man who was putting up posters for the Greens was attacked. Last week, the SPD Senator for Economic Affairs, Franziska Giffey, was slightly injured in an assault involving a bag in Berlin, and members of the Green party and campaign staff were subjected to aggressive harassment in Dresden. Recently, the AfD reported an assault on an election campaign stand in Stuttgart perpetrated by an Antifa group.
This recent incident involving an AfD MP in Schwerin highlights the tense political climate that prevails just before elections.
