AfD gains another point

Once again, the AfD has achieved the highest score ever measured for it in the trend barometer. CDU leader Merz is now clearly ahead in the question of chancellor, but has a lower approval rating than the CDU/CSU as a whole.

Following the split of the Wagenknecht group in the Bundestag, the Left Party lost one percentage point in the trend barometer. The AfD has gained one point compared to the previous week and has thus reached a new all-time high. The values for all other parties remain unchanged.

If the Bundestag were elected this week, the parties could expect the following result: CDU/CSU 31% (Bundestag election in September 2021: 24.1%), AfD 23% (10.3%), SPD 14% (25.7%), Greens 13% (14.8%), FDP 5% (11.5%), Left 3% (4.9%). 11% of voters would opt for other parties.

At 26%, the proportion of non-voters and undecided voters is higher than the proportion of non-voters in the last Bundestag election (23.4%).

There were also only minimal changes in chancellor preferences compared to the previous week. If the Federal Chancellor were directly elected, 15 percent would opt for incumbent Olaf Scholz of the SPD if the opposing candidates were CDU leader Friedrich Merz and Economics Minister Robert Habeck. Merz would receive 24% and Habeck 18%. All of these figures are unchanged compared to the previous week. 43% would not choose either of them.

If it were not Habeck running for the Greens but Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, 19% would opt for Scholz, one point more than in the previous week. Merz would be chosen by 27 percent, one point less. Baerbock would still receive 17 percent. In this constellation, 37% answered "none of the above".

When asked which party is best able to deal with the problems in Germany, 18% currently name the CDU/CSU - an increase of two points compared to the previous week. 7% trust the SPD to be politically competent, 6% the Greens, 8% the AfD and 2% each the FDP or one of the splinter parties. 57% of Germans do not trust any party to solve the problems in Germany.

The data for the RTL/ntv trend barometer was collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa on behalf of RTL Deutschland between December 12 and 18. Data basis: 2501 respondents. Statistical margin of error: plus/minus 2.5 percentage points.
