Advocates Compulsory Military Service for Females, Suggests by Gottschalk
"Thomas Gottschalk and Mike Kruger concur that a stint in the German armed forces, called Bundeswehr, won't do any harm, they assert. To the infamous host of 'Wetten, dass ...?!' show, Gottschalk proposes the same perspective towards the female recruits. In their shared podcast 'Die Supernasen', available on RTL+, Gottschalk expresses his views for and against the compulsory military service for women.
"There's indeed debate about women not having to attend, but men should if feasible," Thomas Gottschalk starts in the podcast 'Die Supernasen' about the pros and cons of women's mandatory military service. "I think it's beneficial, with regards to women's liberation, to contribute a bit there. They don't need to head to the front. It's not even about war," he shares. Instead, Gottschalk believes it's about the feeling of finally stepping out from home: "There are genuinely insane numbers of individuals in this age group who are still living with their parents, who might find some freedom in the Bundeswehr."
Unlike Kruger, who served in the Navy for his military service, Gottschalk, who never joined the Bundeswehr himself, confidently states that "everyone agrees" that military service "is not the worst experience life can throw at you." It's great to be part of a society again, according to him, where one's not "suppressed." Most importantly, he finds, modern parents make life overly easy for their kids, but: "The Bundeswehr doesn't coddle you like that. And for some, that's a good change."
Kruger backs up his viewpoints based on his experiences: "If you aim to grow up, you have to do so within a community." He enjoyed an edge since he was a student in a boarding school. He suggests: "A year in the Bundeswehr should do no harm." Hence, according to him, Defense Minister Pistorius' readiness and ability questionnaire that's sent to all 18-year-old males should be filled out positively.
Kruger's viewpoint on what women undergo in military service is a tad traditional as compared to Gottschalk's: "Whoever wielded an MG (machine gun) through the mud, through the terrain during basic training, knows what that entails. Despite equal rights, I wouldn't force women into it. I favor Pistorius' idea instead: 'Men should apply first.' "
