Tamayo Perry, born and raised in Hawaii, was a well-known lifeguard and a professional surfer for years. On top of that, he dabbled in acting, landing roles in various productions. He portrayed a pirate in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth installment of the popular series featuring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, in 2011. Additionally, he was in movies like "Blue Crush" and "Three Angels for Charlie's Farm," and series like "Lost" and "Hawaii Five-0."
News of Perry's demise left a mournful atmosphere in his hometown. In the words of Kurt Lager, the head of the marine safety department in Honolulu, "Tamayo's charm was contagious, and people adored him so much, but he cared for others even more." Honolulu's mayor, Rick Blangiardi, echoed the sentiment, expressing sorrow over the "terrible loss."
Based on international media reports, Perry, at the age of 49, was making his way to Malaekahana Beach near Goat Island on Oahu on a Sunday to surf. It seems a fatal shark encounter occurred during this journey. Fellow surfers called for help upon noticing an injured person in the water. The rescue team arrived around 1:00 p.m. and managed to get Perry's body to shore with the help of a Jet Ski. However, it was only upon their arrival that they confirmed his death.
Reports suggest that Perry sustained several shark bites, which led to the loss of an arm and a leg.
The BBC reported that Perry was a native of Hawaii and had served as a lifeguard in the area for years. Beyond his surfing skills, he also pursued acting and appeared in films and TV shows.
Perry's passing left a memorable imprint in his community. "Tamayo's charisma was captivating, and people loved him deeply. He cared for others even more," declared Kurt Lager, the head of the marine safety department in Honolulu. Honolulu's mayor, Rick Blangiardi, also expressed his sympathies for the "tragic loss."
