A young mother from Saarland died in Mallorca.
A German woman who recently helped with the flood relief efforts in her hometown of Saarland was among the victims of a restaurant collapse on Mallorca. According to reports, she lost her life in a tragic incident on Thursday evening. The woman, aged 31, hailed from Marpingen in Saarbrücken's St. Wendel district.
The German police confirmed the news on Friday. Tragically, the mother of two was one of the 4 people who lost their lives in the incident. Interestingly, her two children, age two and six, did not accompany her and their father, who had suffered head injuries in the collapse. He was slated to be treated at a hospital in Germany.
The deceased woman and her husband, a fellow volunteer firefighter, had been working tirelessly during the floods in Saarland before the accident occurred.
A close friend and fellow survivor, also a victim of the incident, sustained severe injuries. The family of the deceased woman expressed their shock and incomprehension over the events that unfolded.
Eyewitnesses have claimed that the entire first floor of the "Medusa Beach Club" at Playa de Palma collapsed, reaching all the way to the basement. Spanish authorities have identified 3 other victims: a 20-year-old German, a 23-year-old Spanish national, and a 44-year-old Senegalese man.
It was initially believed that the rooftop terrace had collapsed due to overloading. However, by Saturday, it was believed that there were multiple contributing factors. This included the presence of a large number of guests and potential building permit issues. An investigation into the matter is pending to determine whether the renovations carried out on the building were in accordance with the requested permissions.
