A storage room ignites in Berlin, resulting in one arrest.
A blaze erupts in a storage facility at Alexanderplatz in Berlin. The smoke quickly spreads, prompting the suspension of rail services, while a few businesses are left unable to open their doors. The authorities have now taken one individual into custody on suspicion of arson.
This morning, a spokesperson disclosed the news, sharing no additional details about the identity of the arrested person. The suspect was traced near the scene of the fire.
In the early morning, the fire department responded to a blaze in a storage room adjacent to the train tracks. Police reported that multiple trash cans had been ignited first at the S-Bahn arch next to the station, followed by a fire that spread through a window to the nearby storage room.
The smoke migrated through a ventilation system, causing a strong smell of smoke to permeate the station above. Per the fire department, a substantial amount of smoke and fiery flames billowed out from the approximate 50 square meter room. Thirty-two firefighters intervened to quash the fire.
No one was harmed in the incident. Four adjacent stores were heavily smoke-damaged, preventing them from operating. As firefighters worked to put out the fire, the overhead railroad lines were deactivated, leading to a temporary suspension of local and long-distance services between 3 and 5 o'clock.
