A social organization encourages public employees to participate in pension funds.
The Paritätischer Gesamtverband has revealed that nearly one in five people aged 65 or older in Germany can be classified as impoverished. To combat the growing issue of poverty among senior citizens, they suggest that civil servants and self-employed individuals should contribute to the pension insurance in the future.
Johannes Rock, the future managing director of the Paritätischer Gesamtverband, conveyed this message to the Stuttgarter Zeitung and Stuttgarter Nachrichten papers. He emphasized the need for a robust and anti-poverty pension system. "We can achieve this by expanding the pension insurance system into an employment insurance system, whereby civil servants and the self-employed also contribute, in addition to raising pension levels and implementing minimum pensions," he said. The current pension package doesn't go far enough, Rock added.
He referenced an analysis conducted by the Paritätischer Gesamtverband, which revealed that, twenty years ago, half of those aged 65 or older in Germany were impoverished. The association's representative, who will succeed Ulrich Schneider as Managing Director of the Paritätischer Gesamtverband on August 1st, shared this information.
Next week, the German government plans to adopt the planned pension package II. This proposal, which was developed by Ministry of Labour Hubertus Heil and Finance Minister Christian Lindner, aims to maintain pension levels and curb the anticipated increase in pension contributions by investing in the capital market.

In light of the Paritätischer Gesamtverband's findings, it's proposed that civil servants and self-employed individuals contribute more to pension insurance to combat pensioner impoverishment. The Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband, a part of the Paritätischer Gesamtverband, advocates for the expansion of the pension insurance system into an employment insurance system, allowing these groups to contribute as well.
