A regional politician is running on both the AfD and CDU electoral lists.
Coming Sunday, local elections will be held in Thuringia. It's been discovered that a man is contesting elections on both the CDU and AfD lists - for different positions. The Interior Ministry has confirmed that this is legally acceptable. However, the Left Party is seeking clarification from the CDU.
In the upcoming Thuringia local elections, one individual is campaigning for a seat on Ruhla's town council via a CDU list and simultaneously vying for a spot on Wartburg district council through an AfD list. This information was made public by the town and the district. Both CDU and AfD, when contacted, confirmed that he's not a member of either party.
A spokesperson from the Thuringian CDU disclosed that they're "in touch with those responsible locally" and are investigating the matter. The Thuringian Ministry of Interior, which oversees local elections, stipulates that such a candidacy is permissible on the lists of two parties. Local elections are scheduled for Thuringia this Sunday. District councilmembers will be elected in 13 out of 17 districts, while mayors will be voted for in all five independent cities. Plus, there are district council, municipal council, and city council elections planned across the state. In many places, both honorary and full-time mayors will be elected.
This development signals the beginning of the super election year in Thuringia, with European elections, municipal run-off elections, and state elections slated for fall. Thuringia's Left Party co-chair, Ulrike Grosse-Röthig, addressed the CDU leader, Mario Voigt, demanding clear action. She stated, "If the conservatives can run on the AfD ticket concurrently, then Voigt and his party aren't striving to defend the EU, Germany, or Thuringia from the AfD and enemies of democracy. I expect unequivocal statements from Voigt and practical implications on the ground."
Voigt has frequently asserted in the past that this year's election campaigns will boil down to a clash between the CDU and AfD. The Thuringian AfD is labeled a right-wing extremist party by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and falls under their observation. The CDU has unwaveringly dismissed any cooperation or alignments with the AfD.

In the context of the upcoming Thuringia local elections, both the CDU and AfD acknowledge that the same individual is running for positions on their respective lists, despite not being a member of either party. The Local Elections in Thuringia, which include races for district councilmembers in 13 districts, mayors in all five independent cities, and various council positions across the state, are set to take place this Sunday. Despite the CDU's past claims of distinguishing themselves from the AfD, this shared candidacy has led to criticism from the Left Party, who believe it undermines their stance against the AfD.
