A Mexican mayoral candidate gets fatally shot.
The upcoming election in Mexico is filled with a startling number of murder cases: a whopping 30 politicians have already lost their lives while running for office. The latest victim is an opposition candidate and mayoral candidate from the southern region of the country. He was shot just before making his campaign speech.
As the major elections in Mexico near their end, another mayoral candidate has become another tragic statistic in the string of murders. José Alfredo Cabrera, an opposition politician who was set to run as part of a coalition of the country's largest opposition parties, was shot in the city of Coyuca de Benítez. Footage of the crime circulated on social media, showing the moments after Cabrera had greeted his supporters.
The governor of the state of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, condemned the murder of the politician. In danger of being balloted on Sunday, Mexicans will decide on over 20,000 positions across national and local levels. Mexico has seen around 30 political deaths since June 2023, according to the country's Laboratorio Electoral think tank.
A few weeks prior, the mayor of the city of Mante, Noé Ramos, was attacked at a campaign event. The assailant approached the mayor while he was speaking with citizens in Mante.
Another local politician, Alberto Antonio García, met a similar fate. He was gunned down during his bid for the office of mayor in the town of San José Independencia, located in the state of Oaxaca. Garcia and his wife, Agar Cancinco, who served as the current mayor of the municipality, were reported missing to the authorities. Fortunately, Cancino was later found alive on an island, while Garcia's lifeless body was discovered.
These violent assassinations are thought to be the work of criminal groups aiming to increase their power. From Thursday until the election day on Sunday, all campaign events and related activities are forbidden in Mexico.

Unfortunately, another mayoral candidate, José Alfredo Cabrera, fell victim to crime, being shot in the city of Coyuca de Benítez, further underscoring the issue of murder and manslaughter in Mexico's election process.
