A judge's home displayed an inverted American flag.
Someone flying an American flag upside down is trying to express something: it's like the country is flipped around. This symbol is commonly associated with Trump supporters who believe the 2020 election was taken from Trump unfairly.
An upside-down American flag in front of the house of a Supreme Court judge has caused some commotion in the States. It's transformed into a visible gesture indicating allegiance to Trump by his followers. This flag was discovered in front of Samuel Alito's house in Alexandria, near Washington. Alito is one of the Supreme Court's nine judges. Anonymous sources divulged photos of the flag to the New York Times. These pictures are from early 2021 and the flag remained flipped for a few days.
It raises some eyebrows. Was Alito expressing solidarity with Trump by taking this stance? This could point to potential bias, which shouldn't exist given the court's responsibility to decide on matters related to Trump's post-election power-holding attempts. The Times shared perspectives from a few experts who all expressed concern over perceived bias.
Alito claims he has no connection to the upside-down-flag incident. The blame falls on his wife. She's reportedly a strong Trump supporter and became defensive when neighbors hung up a sign criticizing him. To retaliate, she raised the flag.
For centuries, upside-down flags signified something isn't right in a country. Both liberal and conservative groups have used this symbol. Trump supporters have adopted it as a way to claim electoral fraud. It's a symbol used by extremists in Germany too.
The Supreme Court Loses Its Impartiality
The revelation of Alito's wife's possible alignment with Trump's narrative that the 2020 elections were stolen doesn't necessarily make matters any easier. Other judges' spouses may also hold similar views. According to the Times, Virginia Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, is a conservative activist, who even acted against the election outcome. She was questioned by the U.S. Capitol Tower Investigative Committee in 2022.
The Supreme Court is facing suspicions that it's involved in partisan politics these days. Trump played a major part in that. He kept insisting he had appointed three conservative judges, resulting in a conservative majority in this five-person council. Since then, they've made numerous controversial decisions, the most infamous one being the repeal of constitutional protection of the right to abortion.
The next case is highly controversial as well: whether Trump can be prosecuted for his actions during his presidency. Republicans argue it's not possible. Several legal experts call this absurd. Because no cases of that kind have arisen before, any judgment will rely heavily on the judges' neutrality regarding their political inclinations. The flag debacle puts more attention on Alito.

The flag incident at Justice Alito's home has sparked discussions about the potential political affiliations of Supreme Court justices' families. Some critics argue that Alito's wife's display of a Trump-supporting symbol may indicate bias within the court, which could impact its impartiality.
Republicans, including former President Trump, have been accused of attempting to politicize the Supreme Court, leading to a perceived conservative majority and controversial decisions, such as the repeal of constitutional protection for the right to abortion. The ongoing controversy surrounding Trump's potential prosecution further highlights the importance of the court's neutrality.
