A complaint has been filed against Peru's leader.
Peru's President Dina Boluarte is under accusations of illegally amassing luxury watches. The country's Public Prosecutor's Office has now formally charged her with corruption. However, it'll take some time before a probable trial commences.
Peru's Prosecutor General Juan Carlos Villena made this announcement on Monday, stating that receiving luxurious items is equivalent to accepting bribes. He has filed a constitutional complaint against President Boluarte as "a presumed perpetrator of passive corruption," which was made public through the online service X.
The controversy started in March when a website shared photos of Boluarte wearing a variety of luxury watches when she was still a government official. This resulted in the resignation of six cabinet ministers. Boluarte claimed that the watches from the Rolex brand were on loan from a friend, the governor of the Ayacucho region, Wilfredo Oscorima.
While the prosecutor's claim, presented to Congress, is not an indictment, as Boluarte has immunity during her tenure, the subject must now be discussed by lawmakers. Nonetheless, it will be the judicial system that determines if Boluarte will go to trial following her term ending in July 2026. The scandal forced Boluarte to defend herself against two motions of no confidence in parliament.
Despite defending herself, she's the sixth head of state in Peru in the last eight years and the sixth president in the Andean region during the past 25 years against whom corruption investigations have been opened. Her approval ratings have dipped to just around 12%.
