4-Non Blondes' lead vocalist confronted mortality.
These days, Linda Perry composes tunes primarily for other people to perform. Nonetheless, during the early '90s, Linda Perry, who fronted the group 4 Non Blondes and had an unusual appearance along with their hit "What's up?", also attained chart success herself. Today, the 59-year-old expresses gratitude for being alive after a terrifying cancer diagnosis.
Imagine iconic looks like dreadlocks, red lips, nose rings, top hats, and aviator glasses. These were some of the ways Linda Perry was often portrayed as the lead vocalist of the group 4 Non Blondes in front of the camera. However, her unique voice added to the popularity of the 1993 song "What's up?", which eventually became a global hit. The 4 Non Blondes, however, were primarily considered a one-hit-wonder.
Nearly three decades ago, the documentary "Linda Perry: Let It Die Here" was released. It made its U.S. debut last week. In the film, Perry shares that she was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago, right in the middle of filming the documentary. The distressing news at the time was that she had only a few months left to live.
To illustrate her distinctive appearance, Linda Perry was known during that era for her dreadlocks, red lips, nose ring, top hat, and aviator glasses. Her distinctive voice also played a significant role in the popularity of the 1993 song "What's up?" by the band 4 Non Blondes. Though the band only enjoyed a brief moment in the limelight, Perry's vocals became well-remembered by many.
Now, a documentary about Perry has surfaced, called "Linda Perry: Let It Die Here," which premiered recently in the United States. In the film, Perry reveals that she received a breast cancer diagnosis three years earlier. Initially, she planned to undergo a breast reduction procedure. While preparing for the breast reduction surgery, doctors detected a tumor in her breast during a routine examination. Upon receiving the prognosis, she had no second thoughts about undergoing a double mastectomy. "I'm really happy because there are so many women who don’t get this chance," she says now.
Unfortunately, Perry split from the 4 Non Blondes in 1995, which led to the end of the group. Then, she tried to pursue a solo singing career, but it didn't lead to exceptional outcomes. Instead, she started working as a songwriter for female pop stars like Faith Hill, Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Pink, Gwen Stefani, and Alicia Keys.
In 2003, Perry launched her own record label. The first artist she signed, before she became famous, was James Blunt.
