- 15-year-old sentenced to prison for murder

After a fatal gunshot to the head of a classmate at a school in Lower Franconia, a 15-year-old has been sentenced to eight years and six months in a juvenile detention center for murder**. The Regional Court of Würzburg found that the teenager had killed the 14-year-old in Lohr am Main in September 2023, a court spokeswoman said. The maximum sentence for murder in juvenile court is ten years.

The large juvenile chamber of the court agreed with the prosecution and the civil plaintiff, who considered the murder to have been committed with premeditation, as the shot was fired from behind. The defendant's lawyer had argued for a charge of manslaughter.

Teenager convicted of murder apologizes

The two boys attended the same middle school in the small town in the Spessart region. Since the violent incident, the defendant has been on trial since May 3. He had killed his classmate with a single shot from a pistol, but at the start of the trial, he stated through his lawyer that the shot was not planned, but rather a spontaneous act.

According to a court spokeswoman, he also expressed his wish to undo everything. In his final statement, the 15-year-old apologized to the bereaved and said that he was incredibly sorry. As the defendant is a minor, the trial was held behind closed doors.

The 15-year-old who apologized for his actions in court hails from a small town in the Spessart region of Germany, specifically in a middle school located there. Despite being from a different country, this incident has sparked concerns in The Netherlands as well, with authorities expressing concerns about the increasing number of gun-related incidents among young people.
