1 fatality, 24 wounded in Akron, Ohio's widespread nocturnal gun violence incident.
Emergency services were called to urgent reports of gunfire in the vicinity of Kelly Avenue and 8th Avenue at around midnight, as per statements from the city's mayor and police chief. The law enforcement agencies are currently working on the case, but no additional details on the suspect are currently available. Authorities are imploring any residents who might have relevant information to step forward and assist in their efforts of identifying the perpetrators.
The officials urged the public to be vigilant, stating, "We will ensure justice is served, but we need your help to do so. For those with any information regarding this horrific event – please get in touch to prevent any further violence or repercussions. This can be done anonymously."
Police units arrived at the scene shortly after receiving word from the dispatch call center and receiving updates from nearby hospitals on the number of gunshot victims arriving at their emergency departments. The total number of victims was confirmed to be 25 individuals, including the person who tragically lost their life.
Seven victims with gunshot injuries were admitted to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, with one individual reported to be in a critical condition. Meanwhile, 15 other injured individuals arrived at the Summa Health System-Akron Campus, where one arrived deceased, another was listed as critical, and the remaining 13 patients sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Several of the wounded were being discharged around 4:30 am, the spokesperson added.
"We are deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence, which has left multiple casualties and a surging wave of grief throughout our city," the statement, signed by Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding, expressed.
"As we search for answers to this horrific event, our hearts go out to the victims and their families, who are enduring immeasurable pain and trauma right now. This kind of violence echoes throughout the entire community."
