21:57 Putin appears in Cannes: Polish filmmaker shows biopic with AI
Putin meets his demise. "It was meant to be a happy ending," explains filmmaker Patryk Vega, who presented his biopic about Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Cannes Film Festival. "I called Putin and asked if he wanted to participate... - oh, I was joking," adds the Polish director, who has previously focused on criminal films, with a broad grin. Because the real Putin was unavailable, Vega opted to have him appear as a deep fake with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).

Initially, Vega intended to create his film character using actual footage of Putin. However, the quality was insufficient for the big screen. "AI needs to be trained. It requires 20,000 high-resolution images to operate," explains the filmmaker. Instead, he developed a new technology that employs AI to create the face of a real actor with the same stature as Putin. "It's the first movie to utilize this technology," says Vega. The outcome is astonishing. The film portrays Putin as he is known - in dictator pose, at grand desks, yet also playing the piano and soiling his pants in his hospital bed.

"If Russia manages this with Ukraine, China could do the same with Taiwan," says Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu in an interview with the Kyiv Independent. The onset of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine was a wake-up call for Taiwan, explains the main diplomat of the island nation. If Kiev is defeated, Taiwan might be the next conflict zone. Even after two years, Wu believes that the island's future hinges on the Ukraine war. If Russia succeeds in Ukraine, officials from all sides believe that Beijing will attempt the "reunification" of the two Chinas by force, says Wu.
