The fire in the truck was extinguished by the fire department, but now the burnt-out vehicle must be towed away, according to a spokesperson for the traffic control center. Moreover, the damage to the tunnel is being inspected, which may take longer.
Initially, the Elbtunnel was closed, but later two lanes in the northbound direction could be reopened. Around noon, the traffic control center reported an eleven kilometer long traffic jam in the southbound direction. In the early afternoon, the news came that traffic could be resumed in both directions. Three tubes were reopened, but the fourth one remains closed. According to the police, it will still take some time before traffic flows correctly again. The bypass routes were reportedly very congested - with effects reaching into the city center.
