Zelensky's office boss warns of Ukrainian defeat

The head of the Ukrainian president's office, Andriy Yermak, has warned of Ukraine's impending defeat in the war against Russia if US funding continues to fail. "Of course, it makes the continuation of efforts to liberate (the Ukrainian territories) impossible and creates a great risk of losing this war," Jermak said in Washington, according to a report by the US state broadcaster Voice of America.

The Ukrainian called on Congress to initiate a billion-euro package that has been blocked since October. At the same time, Jermak assured that Kiev also had military plans for the coming year.

Washington had previously admitted that the money to support the country attacked by Russia would run out in December. The Ukrainian budget for 2024 once again requires the equivalent of around 39 billion euros from abroad. The financing of a good 27 billion euros is considered uncertain.

Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for over 21 months with massive Western aid. A long-announced offensive by the Ukrainian army in the summer fell well short of its objectives. Moscow continues to control almost a fifth of Ukraine's territory, including the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.
