Zelensky sees beyond Biden's blunders
During the NATO meeting in Washington, US-President Joe Biden mistakenly referred to his Ukrainian counterpart as Russian President Putin. The spokesperson fueled the debate about Biden's mental fitness, while Selenskyj himself didn't want to make a big deal out of it.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted calmly to Biden's slip-up. During a speech at the NATO summit, Biden had mistakenly referred to Zelensky as Putin. During a stopover in Ireland, Zelensky was asked about his reaction.
When asked how he would respond, Zelensky said it was an error. "The United States has given the Ukrainians a lot of support. I think we can forgive a few mistakes."
Biden had spoken about the Russian aggression war and was about to hand the floor to Zelensky: "Now I yield the floor to the President of Ukraine, who has as much courage and determination as I do. Ladies and gentlemen: President Putin."
Even as he turned away from the podium, Biden realized his mistake. He corrected himself and apologetically said, "I was so focused on defeating Putin." Zelensky, who was standing next to him on the stage, retorted jokingly, "I'm better."
The slip-up added fuel to discussions about Biden's potential re-election campaign. He is currently under close scrutiny following doubts raised about his mental and physical fitness during a TV debate against his opponent Donald Trump.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin was also asked about Biden. In recent conversations, he had experienced Biden as more engaged and informed than ever before, according to the British news agency PA.
