Following one of the biggest assaults on Ukraine since the war's commencement, Russia unleashed 127 missiles and cruise missiles, in addition to 109 drones, onto various Ukrainian regions, as per military updates from Kyiv. Out of the 236 drones and missiles, Ukrainian air defense managed to intercept 201 of them, according to recent statements. Notable damage was reported in the country's energy sector.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the situation following a meeting with military authorities, stating that the aggressor state had targeted civilians with cluster bombs. These explosive devices required deactivation before repairs to the energy infrastructure could commence.

This attack was seen as a retaliation by Russia, following Ukraine's offensive in the Kursk region initiated on August 6. The offensive, involving an initial troop strength of around 10,000 soldiers, had been ongoing for three weeks when these events took place. Experts anticipate Ukraine's capabilities to maintain control over Russian-occupied towns for several months.

Zelenskyy also addressed the restoration of damaged energy facilities with concerned officials, while also discussing the effectiveness of air defense on a regional level. In a previous video message, he had advocated for more weapons and the release of long-range Western missiles to strike Russian territory, though there currently are restrictions in place for their use.

Syrskyj reported his conversation with NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Christopher G. Cavoli, on the Telegram messaging platform. The discussion focused on the frontline situation, improving air defense, and safeguarding cities and critical infrastructure from the constant attacks by the Russian Federation. Syrskyj reportedly highlighted the need for weapons, additional ammunition, and military equipment without providing details.

Beyond the territorial gains from the offensive in the Russian Kursk region, Ukraine continues to face substantial pressure in its eastern areas. In the Donetsk region, Russian advancements led to contingency plans for reinforcements at a meeting led by the military leadership. Most recently, Russian troops declared the capture of several towns within the Donetsk area.

The Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted numerous aircraft-launched missiles during the Russian attack, demonstrating their effectiveness. Despite this, some damage was still inflicted on the country's energy sector, necessitating the deactivation of cluster bombs before repairs could begin.
