- Yunus arrives in Bangladesh - expected to be sworn in
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus has arrived in Bangladesh to lead a transitional government following the resignation of authoritarian Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Local TV footage showed him returning to his South Asian homeland. The 84-year-old inventor of microloans, who had been in France, is set to be sworn in later today, according to Army Chief Waker-uz-Zaman.
Before his return, Yunus urged his countrymen to remain calm. "Let's make the best of our new victory," he said in a statement. "Our youth is ready to take the lead and create a new world."
Former Prime Minister Hasina fled the country on Monday in a military helicopter after weeks of mass protests and deadly clashes between demonstrators and security forces. Over 300 people have died in the protests, according to local media.
The transitional government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, aims to bring about significant changes in Bangladesh. The government's primary focus should be on maintaining peace and stability, considering the recent turmoil and loss of lives.
