Birds - Young ospreys receive numbered metal ring
The number of young Fisher Eagles in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is expected to increase less than in previous years, according to Raptor Expert Torsten Marczak's forecast. There are approximately 270 Fisher Eagle nests in the region. Not every breeding pair had offspring this year. The raptors often build their nests on power lines.
Ornithologists are currently in the districts of Nordwestmecklenburg and Ludwigslust-Parchim, marking the approximately six-week-old young birds with numbered metal rings from the Bird Watching Station and colored plastic rings for their origin, as Marczak explains. Fisher Eagles incubate their eggs for about 42 days, but there is only a small window of opportunity for ringing, which lasts for roughly two weeks. The birds must be large enough for the rings and should not yet be able to fly alone, Marczak adds. On average, a breeding pair raises one to three young, but in rare cases, four small Fisher Eagles can be counted per nest.
The protected area of Schaalsee in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is known for its diverse animal population, including the Osprey, which prefers open water environments. Germany has taken significant strides in environmental conservation, providing habitats for various bird species like the Osprey. The tranquil surroundings of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania offer an ideal environment for the breeding of animals such as the Fisher Eagle and its prey, contributing to the region's rich biodiversity.
