Third anniversary - Wust: 'The flood warns us, to take the lead in climate protection'
Three years after the century flood in western Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister-President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) called for more engagement in climate protection. "The flood disaster reminds us to take action in climate protection and to set the right course now," Wüst told the German Press Agency on the anniversary on Sunday. The flood of 2021 caused unimaginable suffering and left a terrible extent of destruction in its wake. "The losses and the indelible images of the unchecked forces of nature in our minds have shaped us, our country, and our identity."
During the flood disaster that began in the night from July 14 to 15, 2021, alone in NRW 49 people had lost their lives. "We all, our entire country, are thinking of them and their families today," Wüst said.
With a symbolic act, the Landtag intends to commemorate the flood victims on Sunday. On the large screen before the parliament building, a photo of the disaster with words from the Landtag President André Kupers will be shown.
