According to initial reports, the incident occurred on a Thursday around 11 am in the commune of Calasca Castiglione, as the woman was on her way with her husband and two children to a mountain hut using a specialized cable car that transports goods and luggage between the valley and the mountain. Several media outlets report that her clothing got caught in the gondola, and as the transportation sled suddenly started moving, the woman was unable to hold on. She managed to cling to the gondola for roughly 50 meters before being pulled over a cliff. Her body was later found in a roughly hundred meter deep ravine below the cable car.

More than 100 emergency responders, including firefighters, police, and mountain rescue teams, rushed to the scene. With the help of a helicopter and on-site climbers, the woman's body was retrieved from the ravine.

The police are now investigating the cause of the accident. The cable car connects the hamlet of Olino with the Drocala-Alm, covering a distance of nearly 400 meters and passing through a steep ravine. Normally, it is operated by two people at two locations, one at the top and one at the bottom. The starting point is not visible from the control points above, according to media reports.

The mayor of Calasca Castiglione, Silvia Tipaldi, expressed her shock over the tragic death and offered her condolences to the family. "We are waiting for the magistrate's investigation into the installation to obtain more information about the accident."
