In Cottbus, Brandenburg, a CDU candidate was physically attacked and insulted for apparent racist reasons while putting up election posters with family members. Adeline Abimnwi Awemo was assaulted by an unknown woman, according to the police. The woman reportedly hit Awemo on the neck and made derogatory remarks, including "You are not humans."

Awemo was treated at the hospital on Thursday evening. Investigations were launched against the suspected assailant, a 29-year-old woman, for incitement to hatred with bodily harm. The police were alerted via an emergency call.

CDU General Secretary condemns attack sharply

The General Secretary of the Federal CDU, Carsten Linnemann, condemned the attack sharply. This incident "shows exemplarily what is getting out of control in our country," he told the Funke Media Group newspapers. "Hate and violence are on the rise, the polarization spiral is spinning faster," he warned.

For the Brandenburg Greens, Spokeswoman Antje Toepfer stated: "We are appalled by the incident and condemn the act in the strongest terms." She described it as a "cowardly and contemptible attack on an engaged politician." The Greens stand "solidly by the side of the affected candidate." The responsible parties must be held accountable.

The Spokesman for the Brandenburg Left, Sebastian Walter, stated: "Attacks on politicians are now also affecting the CDU, and they make clear how widespread the degeneration and violence readiness is." Whoever attacks candidates, attacks "the democracy as a whole." There should be "no justification for that."

In the past few months, politicians and politicians have been attacked across Germany. A new Brandenburg state parliament is to be elected on September 22.
