Destructive fires - Wildfire in California destroys dozens of houses

A large wildfire in Northern California has destroyed lands and buildings, but the fire department is making progress against the flames with a large-scale operation. Over 4,000 helpers are in action, according to Billy See from Cal Fire. The "Park" fire north of Sacramento is now contained to twelve percent.

Few days ago, the fire was still out of control and spread rapidly over a surface of over 1,450 square kilometers - which is more than the area of the city of Los Angeles.

According to initial estimates, nearly 70 buildings were damaged or destroyed. This number could still increase. Around 4,200 people were ordered to leave the danger zone. According to Cal Fire, this is the seventh largest fire in the history of the West Coast state.

Smoke visible from a distance

Smoke from the fire was visible as far as 250 kilometers away in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to the National Weather Service. Lightly decreasing temperatures and waning winds temporarily aided firefighting efforts. However, temperatures are expected to rise again in the coming days. Experts warn, in light of climate change, that fires are becoming more frequent and more destructive.

Aid from Washington

California Governor Gavin Newsom requested aid from Washington in the fight against devastating wildfires. After visiting the affected areas, Newsom declared a state of emergency for the region. This allows additional resources and personnel for firefighting efforts to be approved more quickly.
