Exhibition in Trier - When forgotten everyday objects come into the museum
The wooden coffee grinder with crank, the cassette player or the plush rag doll may still be familiar. With the electric sound washing machine "Pulsette" as a forerunner of the washing machine and the image projector "Laterna Magica", it could have looked different. Such and other household items from past times are currently on display in the special exhibition "Ausrangiert" at the City Museum Simeonstift Trier, running until October 27.
A hundred years ago, people possessed much less than they do today, according to the museum. A household then consisted of approximately 180 items for a German family. These things were "cared for and maintained, polished and repaired" - and often passed down from generation to generation.
What has changed all of this, the exhibition shows through discarded household items from the past 100 years: The range extends from household appliances to leisure articles and toys as well as fashion. "Many evoke emotions and memories of childhood and youth, others seem like curiosities from forgotten times", the museum shared.
The pieces came from the collection of the City Museum and from museums and institutions in Trier and the region as well as from private lenders.
The special exhibition at the City Museum Simeonstift Trier highlights the evolution of culture in Rhineland-Palatinate, showcasing discarded household items from the past 100 years, including a vintage coffee mill. Visitors can also explore historical museums in Trier, which house a wealth of such artifacts.
