2004 - The Bundestag approves, with the votes of the red-green coalition and the majority of the Union, the merger of unemployment and social welfare (Hartz IV). The new Unemployment Benefit II comes into effect on January 1, 2005.

1994 - In Medellin, Colombian football national team player Andres Escobar is shot. The reason is believed to be an own goal scored by Escobar. Colombia had lost 1:2 to the USA in the Football World Cup.

1989 - The German women's football team wins the European Championship title in their own country for the first time with a 4:1 success against the favored Norwegian women.

1964 - In the USA, President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act, which ends the social separation between Blacks and Whites, initiated by his predecessor John F. Kennedy.

1839 - Africans abduct their homeland and take control of the Spanish slave ship "La Amistad" near Cuba. They kill most of the crew members. In a sensational trial, the rebels are later acquitted in the USA of mutiny and murder charges.

In 1994, a tragic incident occurred in Medellin, Colombia, when their football national team player Andres Escobar was shot. This event was believed to be a consequence of an own goal scored by Escobar during the Football World Cup match against the USA, resulting in Colombia's loss with a score of 1:2.
