1979 - The American space station "Skylab" crashes uncontrollably to Earth. The largest pieces of the space laboratory come down over Southwest Australia. The crash occurs four years earlier than calculated by NASA.

1859 - For the first time, the great bell - Big Ben - rang in London in the clock tower next to the Parliament in Westminster.

1804 - American Vice President Aaron Burr shoots and kills his political and personal rival Alexander Hamilton in a pistol duel. Hamilton was one of the Founding Fathers and served as the first Finance Minister of the USA until 1795. His face still graces the 10-dollar note.
