Western Borde wins European Village Renewal Prize

Approximately 9,000 people live in the Verbandsgemeinde Westliche Boerde. The region is predominantly agricultural. However, it is not only that.

Distinction - Western Borde wins European Village Renewal Prize

The Association Community Westliche Börde was awarded one of few communes in Germany with the European Village Renewal Prize. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the community in the Börde district received the Village Renewal Prize in Silver. The jury praised the successful cooperation of the four communes of Großenhain, Kroppenstedt, Ausleben and Am Großen Bruch. Since 2010, it has been possible to counteract the demographic and financial downward spiral that was becoming apparent. In addition, the jury commended the childcare and economic development in the Association Community.

The European Working Group for Rural Development and Village Renewal named the Czech community of Kostelni Lhota in Middle Bohemia as the winner. Among the nine communities awarded Gold, there were also two German communities: Schalkenmehren in Rhineland-Palatinate and Wahrenholz in Lower Saxony. Among the eight communities awarded Silver, there were six from Germany. Besides the Westliche Börde, the community of Würschnitzal in Saxony was also among them.

The European Village Renewal Prize has been awarded every two years since 1990 with the aim of presenting exemplary activities and outstanding initiatives.

Judgments on the Winners

The Association Community Westliche Börde's distinction with the European Village Renewal Prize in Silver highlighted its significant efforts in overcoming demographic and financial challenges in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The successful cooperation in polders between Großenhain, Kroppenstedt, Ausleben, and Am Großen Bruch was lauded by the jury. Additionally, the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMELV) acknowledged the contribution of the Association Community in promoting childcare and economic development.
