Unstable weather poses a challenge for the organizers of the Landesgartenschau, but many people do not let that deter them from visiting.

Flower show attracts visitors - Weather disrupts course of the horticultural show in Bad Dürenberg

At the halfway point, over ten thousand people have already visited the Landesgartenschau in Bad Dürrkenberg. Approximately 220,000 visitors have been counted so far, stated Landesgartenschau Chief Michael Steinland to the German Press Agency. "The response from the visitors has been overwhelmingly positive," he expressed satisfaction. The Flower Show is scheduled to remain open until October 13.

However, the organizers have faced challenges from the weather in recent weeks. The relatively high temperatures led to the daffodils and tulips blooming much earlier in the year than anticipated, forcing early replanting, according to Steinland. "As a result, we were again forced into early replanting."

Shortly after the opening in mid-April, strong night frosts caused damage, as Steinland reported. "Overall, a great weather instability has characterized the entire course so far." The show garden along the Gradierwerk of Bad Dürrkenberg had to be cleared six times due to storms.

Colors White and Blue in the Foreground

Among the visitors are many children and adolescents, for whom there are special offerings and program points. On average, visitors spend around four hours on the premises, according to the organizers.

The 178-day show in the Solestadt in the Saalekreis was supposed to take place in 2022 but was repeatedly postponed. On approximately fifteen hectares of land in the newly designed Kurpark of Bad Dürrkenberg, the colors White and Blue are predominant during the show - as a symbol for Salt and Sole. The organizers expected at least 370,000 visitors by October at the beginning.

Additional costs due to challenging construction conditions

The costs for the Landesgartenschau amount to millions of Euros. Steinland stated that approximately 50 million Euros would be spent in total by the end - about 12 million Euros just for the execution. After the opening, the total amount had risen again by an additional 580,000 Euros, he added. "The main cause for these additional costs are extra costs for the Spielelement Gradierwerk and the challenging construction conditions in winter and spring."

The sixth Landesgartenschau will take place in Lutherstadt Wittenberg in 2027. In the past years, the shows in Sachsen-Anhalt took place in Zeitz (Burgenlandkreis, 2004), Wernigerode (Landkreis Harz, 2006), Aschersleben (Salzlandkreis, 2010), and Burg (Landkreis Jerichower Land, 2018).
