Warnings of severe weather and flooding in the south

The German Weather Service (DWD) is warning of thunderstorms in southern Germany at the start of the week. In the Black Forest and the foothills of the Alps, persistent rain is to be expected until Wednesday in some areas, the DWD predicted on Monday. Streams and smaller rivers could burst their banks and landslides cannot be ruled out.

In the Black Forest, rainfall of between 60 and 100 liters per square meter could accumulate by midday on Tuesday, and up to 100 liters per square meter in the foothills of the Alps by midday on Wednesday, according to reports on Monday. In the Oberallgäu region, more than 140 liters per square meter are expected. It is also expected to be wet in the Bavarian Forest.

Stormy gusts of between 60 and 75 kilometers per hour are expected to accompany the rain. Gale-force gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour are expected on the peaks. The Bavarian Flood Information Service is also expecting flooding, especially in Swabia. Due to the rain, the water level of the Iller is expected to rise, among other things. Message level 3 could be reached in Kempten and Sonthofen around midday on Tuesday. This could lead to isolated flooding in built-up areas.

Rain is also on the cards for the rest of Germany, and according to the DWD forecast it will be windy to stormy, with temperatures remaining mainly mild. Gale-force winds are possible on exposed peaks on Tuesday night. The east can look forward to some sunshine on Tuesday, with temperatures of up to 15 degrees possible. On the border with Denmark, however, highs will be around nine degrees.

The heavy rain and gusty winds could escalate into a storm in some parts of southern Germany, as warned by the German Weather Service. In the Black Forest and the foothills of the Alps, these storm conditions might lead to bursting river banks and the possibility of landslides.
