Warning strikes - Warning strike in daycare centers continues

With a demonstration in front of the office of the Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder (TdL) union, daycare providers in the Kindergarten self-owned businesses are continuing the five-day warning strike today. A demonstration is planned afterwards at the Senatsverwaltung für Bildung, Jugend und Familie. The union Verdi is putting pressure on the state for higher educational quality and reliefs.

The participation in the warning strike, which lasts from Monday to Friday, is reportedly stable. A spokesperson for Verdi stated that approximately 3000 people participated.

No approach in sight

Verdi is demanding a corresponding collective bargaining agreement from the state, in which provisions for group sizes and compensation for burdens are to be anchored. The Senate rejects this with reference to Berlin's membership in the Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder. Verdi accuses the Senate of blocking a constructive solution in the interest of employees, parents, and children.

Approximately ten percent of the around 2,900 Kindergartens in Berlin belong to so-called communal self-owned businesses. There, around 7,000 daycare providers and other employees care for approximately 35,000 children. The remaining institutions are run by free providers and are not currently on strike. In total, approximately 165,000 children attend Berlin Kindergartens.

  1. The United Services Union, backing the daycare providers, announced a youth rally in solidarity with the five-day warning strike, set to take place in Berlin's city center.
  2. The warning strike, a strong warning to the Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder TdL, aims to pressure the office into addressing the concerns of education providers and children in Kindergartens.
  3. Despite the Senate's rejection of Verdi's demands for a collective bargaining agreement, warning strike participation among the children's educators in Berlin's Kindergartens remains steady.
  4. As the warning strike continues, parents are alerted to potential disruptions in their children's Kindergarten schedules, urged to consider alternative arrangements during this period.
  5. In response to the warning strike, the Office of the Berlin Senate released a statement condemning the action, officially labeling it as a form of unlawful industrial action.
  6. The Trade Union's call for a higher educational quality and reliefs in Kindergartens has sparked growing support among families, concerned for the wellbeing and safety of their children.
