Russian invasion - War against Ukraine: this is the situation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has emphasized the importance of German military aid for strengthening Ukraine's air defence.
This means "saving thousands of Ukrainian lives", said Selensky in his evening video address. Thanks to a new German aid package, urgently needed 155 millimeter caliber artillery shells would also be delivered.
According to the German government, Germany handed over 3840 rounds of this artillery ammunition to Ukraine in its latest delivery. In addition, five drone detection systems, five sniper rifles, a number of articulated lorries, trucks, minibuses, off-road vehicles and other military equipment were delivered.
Fierce fighting around Bakhmut and Avdiivka
According to the Ukrainian military, most of the fighting between Ukrainian and Russian troops recently took place in eastern Ukraine. On the front near Avdiivka, 20 Russian attacks have been repelled in the last 24 hours. According to the Ukrainian General Staff's frontline report, the Russians are said to have attacked 15 times around Bakhmut. A total of 69 battles are said to have taken place along the entire front line during this period.
Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia for more than 21 months. Germany is supporting Kiev with arms deliveries and training Ukrainian soldiers, among other things. However, the Ukrainian counter-offensive launched in the summer of 2023 fell short of the expectations of politicians and civil society.
What is important today
Fighting continues in the south and east of Ukraine. However, the onset of winter has severely impaired the momentum of the fighting on both sides.
