- Wacken Firefighters performing in front of metal fans
Kicking off the Wacken Open Air (W:O:A), the Wacken Firefighters are revving up the heavy metal fans. Even before entering the stages, numerous metal fans are loudly chanting "Wacken, Wacken, firefighters!" As the show begins in sweltering summer weather, cheers erupt on the packed area in front of the stage.
The band isn't just playing folk songs or Schlager, but also instrumental cover versions of modern pop songs like "Let me entertain you" by Robbie Williams. The festival-goers also seem to enjoy Peter Schilling's "Major Tom". "Oh man, it's so great to see you all again," says a member of the band.
Mecca of the Metal World
The Wacken Open Air, with 85,000 expected visitors, has been sold out for nearly a year. It is set to be officially opened in the afternoon.
Considered one of the largest heavy metal festivals worldwide, W:O:A turns the small town of 2,000 inhabitants into the epicenter of the scene for several days. Some of the headliners include Scorpions, Korn, Blind Guardian, Extrabreit, Suzi Quatro, and Gene Simmons, who was previously the singer and bassist for Kiss and is now performing with his solo band.
Info
Despite the anticipated crowd of 85,000, the Wacken Firefighters continue to ensure safety at the Wacken Open Air. The Mecca of the Metal World transforms its streets into makeshift concert venues, with bands like Blind Guardian performing alongside legends such as Gene Simmons.
