Crises and Urgent Situations - VP of Malawi dies in airplane accident.
VP of Malawi Saulos Chilima perished in a plane wreck. President Lazarus Chakwera revealed this news on Tuesday, mentioning that the vanished military aircraft with Chilima and 9 others was spotted in Chikangawa forest near Lilongwe. The obliterated plane didn't leave any survivors, Chakwera shared in a TV address. He outlined the devastating situation and commemorated Chilima as a remarkable politician and an exceptional individual.
Chilima and his colleagues departed from Lilongwe on Monday morning, but they never made it to their destination. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the air traffic control recommended returning to Lilongwe just before the planned landing. Moments later, they lost contact with the pilots and the aircraft disappeared from the radar. The reason for the crash was not yet disclosed. "There was a catastrophe involving this plane," Chakwera commented, who had flown on that ill-fated aircraft recently.
Chilima (51) had plans to participate in the elections, slated for September 2025, as a candidate.
